I used to use the open source Jabber Instant messanger while my college days.I miss using Jabber,it has lot of features which I could not say about the irritating IMs with ads from Yahoo or MSN.
Jabber uses the XMPP protocal. The main advantage is that it is open source, meaning that anyone can deploy /develop their own IMs based upon the protocal.
The advantages according to the wikipedia page are
Advantages
* Open : the jabber protocols are free, open and public. Making it easy to implement clients or servers
* Standard : The jabber protocols XMPP is a IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) standard
* Decentralized : anyone can run their own Jabber server
* Secure : It is possible to encrypt the communication between client and server.
* Extensible : New feature can be added to the protocol, using the power of XML namespaces.
IETF's main aim is to standarize web protocals.
Those days were long gone but XMPP is back with a bang, thanks to Google again.
The much superior Google Talk (as compared to other IMs) features open protocals ,no adds, multi messanger connectivity(ie you can use Gaim in Linux or Trillian in Windows to connect and chat), and high quality voice chat.
I highly recommend using the IM in place of MSN or yahoo.
In my final note, I am using Google AdSense in this page, which (I think) pays me $0.01 for every search/add that is done through the Google bars/text box. Unfortunately,I don't know that I will earn $100(the minimum amount for payment). It takes 10,000 distinct(that is differnt computers) to search through the google boxes.
And I needed Linux and Scholar searches ,( I modified their code so that you could search Linux/Scholar) and I don't know whether that adds up the clicks or not.
Hope it does.
